3 Ways To Whiten Your Teeth Naturally

Posted on: 5 April 2016

If your teeth are discolored, it may have little to do with your actual dental health. Brushing your teeth regularly is not usually enough to avoid dental staining. Over time, teeth absorb the pigments or colorants that are contained in the food that you eat. Once these pigments are deeply trapped within the pores of the teeth, a bleaching solution is often required to bleach the stains away. In some cases, however, if dental staining is light enough, natural substances can be used to polish discoloration from the surface of the teeth. Here are a few ways to whiten your teeth naturally:

Olive Oil

Olive oil can be used for oil pulling, which is an ancient Indian practice that helps improve oral health. As the oil is moved about the mouth, it traps oral bacteria. The bacteria are released when you spit the oil out.

This is important since oral bacteria are often the cause of dental decay and combine with food particles to form yellowing dental plaque. Since olive oil has antibacterial properties, in addition to trapping the bacteria, it helps kill them.

Olive oil also helps dissolve oil-based stains that may have been absorbed by the teeth.

After releasing the olive oil from your mouth, rinse your mouth thoroughly with water and brush your teeth in your usual manner.

The yellow spice that is a common flavoring in Indian recipes can help brighten the color of your teeth. Turmeric has a mildly abrasive texture that can polish tooth enamel. To apply turmeric, brush with the powder as you would with store-bought toothpaste.

Turmeric can be quite staining to clothing, skin and countertops. Thus, once the spice becomes wet, be sure to avoid leaving it on your bathroom counter or even your fingers for a prolonged period.

After using the turmeric, the bristles of your toothbrush will be yellow, but the new color will not affect the effectiveness of your brush.

Using turmeric is often effective for promoting overall good oral health. The spice contains a compound called curcumin, which has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Thus, the health of both your gums and teeth can be improved using turmeric.

Strawberries, which are often eaten for their flavor and vitamin content, can also brighten your teeth. The fruit contains malic acid, which can remove dental stains. To apply strawberries, crush the berries and brush with the red paste. Be sure to rinse your mouth thoroughly and brush with your regular toothpaste after the application. This will remove any residual acid from the fruit leftover from the whitening session.
